Energy Assistance

We work with local community action agencies, township trustees, Indiana 211, and other community resources to help residential members who are having difficulty paying their electric bills.

LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps low-income households with immediate home energy needs. Applying for LIHEAP may also help eligible residential members qualify for winter and extreme heat disconnection protections.

Several resources may be available to help residential members pay energy bills. Members are encouraged to apply early and contact our office if their account is at risk of disconnection.

LIHEAP is a federally funded grant program that helps low-income households meet immediate home energy needs. Funds are distributed through local Community Action Agencies.

Indiana 211 connects Hoosiers with local agencies and resources for utility bill assistance, food, health, shelter, employment, counseling, and more.

Indiana law provides electric service disconnection protections for residential members who meet specific LIHEAP-related requirements.

Winter Protection: Electric service will not be disconnected between December 1 and March 15 for residential members who are eligible for and have applied for LIHEAP, or who are receiving LIHEAP heating assistance.

Extreme Heat Protection: Electric service will not be disconnected on days when the National Weather Service forecasts a heat index of 95°F or higher at the member’s service address within the next 48 hours for residential members who are eligible for and have applied for LIHEAP during the current calendar year.

If a disconnection notice has been issued: When the scheduled disconnection day meets the 95°F heat index forecast threshold, the disconnection will be tolled until the first day on which the threshold is not forecasted to be reached.
