Members can help hold down the cost of electricity by managing their energy consumption with an energy management switch. Conserving energy reduces the amount of electricity used in your home during “peak” periods (the time it’s most expensive to generate). When periods of peak demand occur, Southern Indiana Power can automatically signal your water heater and central air conditioning/heat pump cooling unit to conserve energy consumption for short periods of time. The switch only operates for very short periods of time, so you should not experience any loss of hot water or temperature change in your home during a “peak” event.
When you join us in this effort to reduce energy use at key times of the day, we’ll reward you with up to $60 per year in bill credits.
You can choose to have a switch installed on your air conditioner, water heater, or both to maximize the bill credits you will receive. There is no cost to you for the installation of the switch.
When energy use is at its peak, a signal will be sent from our power supplier to the water heater and cooling units to conserve energy for short periods of time (usually 2 to 4 hours). Since water heaters act as storage devices, there should be no loss of hot water. For air conditioning, the outdoor compressor unit is cycled for brief periods while the circulation fan continues to operate. You’ll still have plenty of hot water and the inside temperature of your home shouldn’t be compromised.
By getting as many people as possible to participate, we’re reducing peak demand when energy is the most expensive, and that means we can help keep energy costs low, as well as help reduce greenhouse emissions. So, in the end, we all benefit. Southern Indiana Power is a cooperative, and that means we have a real concern for the communities we serve. Simply request to install the switch and we’ll give you up to $60 in bill credits to participate – a $5 bill credit each month for six months during June, July, August, and then again in December, January, and February on your water heater. Then we’ll also give you a $10 bill credit each month for three months during June, July, and August for your air conditioner or heat pump.
Southern Indiana Power will contact the contractors we work with to install and maintain the switch at no cost to you. If you’re ever dissatisfied or inconvenienced, we will have the technician remove the switch. It’s just that simple.
